Orthodontics

At Soni Dentistry, we provide early interceptive orthodontic care for children ages 4 to 8 to help support healthy jaw development, proper bite alignment, and confident smiles. By identifying concerns early, such as crowding, narrow arches, or airway-related issues, we can guide facial growth during a critical stage of development. Our goal is to deliver high-quality early orthodontic treatment in a comfortable, supportive, and child-friendly environment.

What is Early Orthodontic Expansion?

Early orthodontic expansion is an interceptive treatment designed for children typically between the ages of 4 and 8. During this critical window of physical development, specialized dental appliances—such as fixed or removable expanders—are used to gently guide the growth of the upper jaw and mid-face.

Instead of waiting to simply straighten crooked adult teeth later in life, early expansion focuses on orthopedic facial development. It physically widens narrow dental arches and addresses mid-face deficiencies before the facial bones fully fuse, creating a proper foundation for both oral and systemic health.

What are the Benefits?

Because a significant portion of a child’s jaw growth is complete by age 7, capitalizing on this rapid growth phase allows for simpler, more effective structural corrections.

Clinical research into craniofacial development and airway health demonstrates that early expansion provides several core benefits:

  • Improved Nasal Breathing and Airway Health: The roof of the mouth is the floor of the nasal cavity. Expanding the upper jaw directly increases nasal volume, which reduces airway resistance and promotes healthy nasal breathing rather than mouth breathing.

  • Minimized Future Orthodontic Complexity: Creating adequate room for permanent teeth early intercepts severe crowding. This proactively reduces the likelihood that a child will require complex braces, permanent tooth extractions, or corrective jaw surgeries in their teenage years.

  • Optimal Facial Balance: Properly guiding the growth of the upper jaw and mid-face prevents skeletal deficiencies (such as a sunken mid-face or recessed lower jaw), promoting better facial symmetry and overall aesthetic balance.

  • Supported Tongue Posture: A widened palate provides the space necessary for the tongue to rest naturally against the roof of the mouth. Proper tongue posture acts as a natural scaffolding that maintains jaw width and protects the airway long-term.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic treatment works by gradually moving teeth into the correct position using braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. The method used depends on the patient’s age, dental condition, and treatment goals.

Before beginning treatment, your dentist or orthodontist will provide a comprehensive evaluation, discuss your options, and create a personalized plan to achieve optimal results.

Who is a Candidate?

Early orthodontic expansion is considered for children who are capable of cooperating during routine dental visits and fall within the optimal growth window of 4 to 8 years old. A child may benefit from early evaluation and intervention if they present with any of the following signs:

  • Visible crowding or overlapping of primary (baby) teeth (a lack of natural spacing between baby teeth is a primary indicator of a narrow arch).

  • Bite misalignments, such as crossbites, underbites, or deep overbites.

  • A narrow, V-shaped upper jaw.

  • Chronic mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, or other signs of sleep-disordered breathing.

  • Poor tongue resting posture or tongue-tie symptoms.

The Science Behind Our Team Approach

Improving nasal breathing takes a collaborative effort and cannot be done with dental treatment alone. We work with other health professionals in the community to help our patients improve their nasal breathing.

  • Myofunctional Therapy: Research shows that combining dental appliances with myofunctional therapy improves sleep quality, increases oxygen levels, and prevents airway issues from returning. The myofunctional therapist addresses dysfunction of oral-facial muscles, incorrect swallowing, lip strength & tongue posture. This is a critical adjunct to structural airway interventions to ensure long-term functional changes in muscle resting posture

  • Postural Compensations & Bodywork: Clinical studies confirm that children who chronically breathe through their mouths develop altered posture to compensate. This compensatory mechanism alters breathing biomechanics, validating the need for physical and postural rehabilitation alongside dental and medical interventions

  • Medical Management is Necessary: Treating underlying allergies and inflammation is a mandatory step to get children breathing through their noses again. This is why it’s important to see work with a physician, or an otolaryngologist, or an allergist, or a naturopath
